Intravenous iron infusion

When iron tablets have not done the job, an iron infusion can be a quick and uncomplicated way to restore your iron levels. I offer it at The Blackheath Hospital, always after a consultation first, so we can be sure it is the right treatment for you.

Is it right for you?

Who an iron infusion may help

Many people with low iron do well on tablets. For others, tablets cause stomach upset, are hard to keep taking, or simply do not raise iron levels enough. In those situations, giving iron directly into a vein can be a gentler and more reliable route.

If you would like to understand more about low iron, its causes and symptoms, my iron deficiency page explains it in plain language.

It may suit you if

  • Iron tablets have not improved your levels
  • You have found tablets difficult to tolerate
  • Your body may not absorb iron well from your gut

Why I always see you first

Low iron is a sign that something needs attention, not a diagnosis in itself. Before any infusion, I want to confirm that iron deficiency really is the cause of how you feel, look for the reason behind it, review your blood results and make sure an infusion is safe and sensible for you. That conversation happens at a dedicated initial consultation for iron deficiency.

What to expect

Three simple steps

Here is how your care fits together, from our first conversation to checking the treatment has worked.

  1. Consultation

We talk through your symptoms, history and blood results. If an infusion is right for you, I explain what it involves and answer your questions before we plan it.

  2. Infusion day

You come to The Blackheath Hospital, where the iron is given through a small drip in your arm while you sit comfortably. It is a quick and uncomplicated appointment, and you are looked after throughout.

  3. Follow-up

After treatment, we review your blood results together to check your iron has recovered and agree any next steps at a follow-up consultation.

Questions

Common questions about iron infusions

Something not covered here? Get in touch with the practice and we will be glad to help.

Can I book the infusion without a consultation?

No. I always see you first so we can confirm iron deficiency is the problem, understand why it has happened and make sure an infusion is the right and safe choice for you.

Will I need more than one infusion?

It depends on your blood results and how low your iron is. I will explain what I recommend for you at your consultation, and we review your progress at follow-up.

Are there any side effects?

Iron infusions are generally well tolerated, but like any treatment they can have side effects. I talk these through with you beforehand, and you are monitored during your infusion.

I am not sure which appointment to book. What should I do?

Please contact the practice and we will point you to the right appointment.
