Iron deficiency

Feeling tired all the time, or being told your iron is low, can be worrying. Iron deficiency is common and often straightforward to put right. What matters most is understanding why it has happened, and I will take the time to explain each step with you and your family.

A sign worth understanding, not a reason to panic

Low iron tells us something in the body needs attention. Together we find out what, and make a clear plan.

What is iron deficiency?

Iron helps your red blood cells carry oxygen. When stores run low you may feel tired, breathless or foggy, and the reason it happened always needs finding.

Is iron deficiency the same as anaemia?

Not quite. Iron deficiency means your body's iron stores are low. If it goes on long enough, it can lead to anaemia, where your haemoglobin level falls. You can have low iron without being anaemic, and anaemia can have other causes.

Can I just buy iron tablets from the pharmacy?

It is best to speak to your GP or to me first. Iron supplements are not right for everyone, and taking them without knowing why your iron is low can delay finding the underlying cause.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring any recent blood test results, a list of your current medicines and supplements, and details of any iron treatment you have had before. A few notes on your symptoms and how long you have had them can be really helpful too.

Why would I need a follow-up after treatment?

A follow-up lets us check that your iron levels have recovered, that you are feeling better, and that the reason for the deficiency has been dealt with, so it is less likely to return.
