Initial haematology consultation
Your first appointment with me is about understanding you: your symptoms, your history and any results you already have. By the end, you will know what I think is going on, what tests (if any) are needed, and what happens next.
A thorough first appointment, with time to talk
Many people come to see me because a blood test has shown something unexpected, because their GP has suggested a specialist opinion, or because they have symptoms that have not yet been explained, such as tiredness, bruising or swollen glands.
Whatever brings you here, I will take the time to listen, look carefully at the information we already have and explain things in plain language. Family members are very welcome to join you, and there is always space for questions.
If a routine test has worried you, you may find it helpful to read about abnormal blood test results before your appointment.
-
Your history and symptoms
How you have been feeling, your past health, medicines and any family history of blood conditions.
-
Your existing results
I review the blood tests, scans and letters you already have, so nothing is repeated without good reason.
-
The right tests
Where more information is needed, I arrange only the tests that will genuinely help answer the question.
-
Your questions
Time to ask anything that is on your mind, and to make sure the plan makes sense to you.
Suspected iron deficiency?
I also offer a dedicated initial consultation for people with suspected iron deficiency, focused on finding the cause and agreeing the most suitable way to restore your iron levels.

Common questions about your first appointment
If your question is not answered here, please get in touch with the practice and we will be glad to help.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
A letter from your GP is always helpful, as it tells me why you have been referred and what has been done so far. If you are using health insurance, your insurer may have its own requirements, so it is worth checking with them. If you are unsure, please contact the practice before booking.
How do I share my referral letter and previous results?
You can upload them to your secure patient portal before your appointment. The portal is also where you will receive your clinic letters afterwards, so everything stays together in one safe place.
Can a family member or friend come with me?
Yes, you are very welcome to bring someone with you. Many people find it reassuring to have a second pair of ears, and it can help when you talk things over at home afterwards.
Will I need tests on the day?
That depends on your situation. Sometimes your existing results are enough to give you an answer; sometimes further blood tests or other investigations are needed. I will explain what I recommend and why before anything is arranged.
Which appointment should I book if I think I have iron deficiency?
There is a dedicated initial consultation for suspected iron deficiency. You can read more on the iron deficiency page, or contact the practice if you are not sure which appointment is right for you.
