Condition guide

Lymphoma, CLL and lymphoproliferative conditions

Hearing words like lymphoma or leukaemia can be frightening, for you and for the people who love you. I'll explain what is happening in plain language, find out exactly which condition it is, and plan the right next step with you, whether that is treatment or simply keeping a careful eye on things.

You may be reading this because

  • A swollen gland hasn't settled, or you have night sweats or weight loss
  • A blood test showed a raised lymphocyte count
  • You or a family member has a diagnosis and wants to understand it better

About lymphoma and CLL

Lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) happen when some lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, grow in an uncontrolled way. Some types are slow and only need careful monitoring; others need prompt treatment.

Common questions

If your question isn't here, get in touch with the practice and we'll be glad to help.

Do swollen glands mean I have lymphoma?

Usually not. Glands often swell while your body fights an infection, and most go down within a few weeks. I'd suggest getting checked if a gland stays swollen for longer, keeps growing, or comes with night sweats, fevers or weight loss.

What happens at my first appointment?

I'll listen to your story, ask about any symptoms, examine you and go through the results you already have. If more tests are needed, such as further blood tests, a scan or a bone marrow biopsy, I'll explain why and what each one involves, so you leave knowing what happens next.

I already have a diagnosis. Can I get a second opinion?

Yes. I offer a second medical opinion for people who would like an independent view of their diagnosis or treatment plan. You can read what it includes on my haematology services page.

Can I bring a family member with me?

Of course. Many patients find it helpful to bring a partner, relative or friend, especially when we are talking about a new diagnosis or treatment options. Questions from family members are always welcome.
