Conditions I see

Paraproteins, MGUS and myeloma

Being told a blood test has found a paraprotein can be unsettling. In many people it is a small, stable finding that I simply keep an eye on with regular blood tests, not something that needs treatment. I'll explain exactly what your results mean and what, if anything, needs to happen next.

In brief

  • Often found by chance during routine or unrelated blood tests.

  • Usually monitored rather than treated, with checks at agreed intervals.

  • A clear plan, explained in plain language for you and your family.

Understanding what a paraprotein means

A paraprotein is a single antibody made in excess by one group of plasma cells. Most people have MGUS, which is not cancer and is usually monitored with blood tests. Myeloma is when those cells start causing harm.

Common questions

Does having MGUS mean I have cancer?

No. MGUS is not cancer and it does not need treatment. Most people with MGUS never develop myeloma. Monitoring is a sensible precaution so that, in the uncommon event that something changes, it is noticed early.

How often will I need blood tests?

It depends on the type and level of your paraprotein and your other results. Checks are usually a little closer together at first, then spaced further apart once things are shown to be stable. I'll agree a plan with you and explain what each test is looking for.

Will I need a bone marrow biopsy?

Not always. Many people with MGUS never need one. If your results suggest a biopsy would help, I'll talk you through why and what to expect. I carry it out under local anaesthetic, and IV sedation is available if you would feel more comfortable.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring any recent blood test results, letters from your GP or hospital, and a list of your medicines. You are very welcome to bring a family member or friend. If you have questions before booking, contact the practice and the team will help.
