Blood clots

Finding out that you or someone you love has had a deep vein thrombosis or a pulmonary embolism can be frightening. Most people recover well, and I am here to help you understand what happened, why it may have happened and how to lower the chance of it happening again.

Understanding blood clots

A clot in a deep vein (DVT) or one that reaches the lungs (PE) needs prompt treatment. Afterwards, a specialist review explains why it happened and how to lower the risk.

Common questions

If your question isn't here, please get in touch with the practice and we will help.

Will I need blood thinners for the rest of my life?

Not necessarily. Many people stop after a set course once the clot has been treated. If the clot had no clear trigger or there are ongoing risk factors, longer treatment may be safer. I will talk the options through with you so the decision feels right for you.

Should my children or family be tested for a clotting condition?

It depends on your own history and what any tests show. Testing family members is not always helpful and can sometimes cause needless worry, so I look at each family's situation carefully and only recommend tests where the result would change what we do.

Is it safe to travel or fly after a clot?

Most people can travel again once treatment is under way and they feel well. The right timing and precautions, such as staying mobile and keeping hydrated on long journeys, depend on your circumstances, so it is worth asking before you book.

Do I need a referral to see you?

Please contact the practice and the team will explain what is needed for your appointment. It helps to bring any hospital letters, scan reports and a list of your current medicines, so we can make the most of our time together.
