Conditions I see
Easy bruising and platelet problems
Noticing bruises you can't explain, or bleeding that takes a long time to stop, can be worrying, especially when it's your child. Most of the time there is a simple explanation. When there isn't, I'll help you find the cause and explain clearly what it means for you and your family.

Why bruising or bleeding can happen
Platelets and clotting factors stop bleeding. If either is low or not working well, bruises appear more easily.
- A low platelet count
- Platelets that don't work as well
- Clotting problems or medicines

How I can help
In an initial consultation I listen to the full story, examine you and arrange the right blood tests. I also review the blood film under the microscope myself, which can reveal platelet size and shape that an automated count can miss.

Is it normal to bruise easily?
Some people simply bruise more easily than others, and that is often harmless. It becomes worth looking into if the bruising is new, has changed, appears without any knock, or comes with other bleeding such as nosebleeds or heavy periods.
My child seems to bruise a lot. Should I be worried?
Bruises on the shins, knees and elbows are part of an active childhood. It is sensible to get advice if bruises appear on softer areas, come with tiny red spots, nosebleeds or bleeding gums, or if your child seems unwell or unusually tired. Your GP is a good first step, and the practice team can tell you whether an appointment with me suits your child's age.
Should I stop my medicines before the appointment?
Please don't stop any prescribed medicine without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it. Instead, bring a list of everything you take, including painkillers bought from a pharmacy, vitamins and herbal supplements. It helps me a great deal in working out the cause.
What tests might I need?
Usually a full blood count, a look at the blood film and a clotting screen. Depending on what these show, I may suggest more specialised tests of platelet function or clotting factors. A bone marrow test is only needed occasionally, and I will always explain why before anything is arranged. You can read about every appointment and procedure on my services page.
